Terraform vs AWS CDK

An architectural teardown. I compare Declarative HCL against Imperative Code to solve issues like managing complex infrastructure deployments at scale and maintaining reproducible cloud environments.

Terraform

Declarative HCL

Cloud-agnostic infrastructure as code tool by HashiCorp.

When to Use It

Multi-cloud environments and infrastructure-as-data teams that require strict state management.

AWS CDK

Imperative Code

AWS-native framework to define cloud infrastructure using familiar programming languages.

When to Use It

AWS-exclusive developers who want to write infra in TypeScript/Python and leverage existing software engineering practices.

Paradigm Shift: Declarative vs Imperative

Terraform relies on static state files written in Declarative HCL to map the desired infrastructure. In contrast, AWS CDK allows engineers to write Imperative Code (TypeScript, Python), which synthesizes CloudFormation templates at runtime, unlocking standard software engineering practices (loops, conditionals) at the cost of cloud-lock-in.

Architectural Conclusion
